How to Measure for Kitchen Cabinets Before You Order
Accurate measurements are the foundation of a successful cabinet order. Before choosing cabinet widths or finishes, record the room as it exists today. A few careful notes can prevent last-minute changes when cabinets, appliances, and trim come together.
Start with a simple wall-by-wall drawing
Draw each wall separately and label its overall length. Work from one corner in a consistent direction. Include every return, bump-out, window, door, and opening. Your drawing does not need to be architectural; it needs to be clear enough to reference while building your cabinet list.
Record the details that affect cabinet placement
- Ceiling height and any soffits or bulkheads
- Window width, height, and distance from adjacent corners
- Door openings, trim, swing direction, and nearby traffic paths
- Plumbing locations, electrical outlets, gas lines, and vents
- Appliance specifications, including required clearances
- Floor changes, uneven walls, or areas that are not square
Measure more than once
Measure each wall at the floor, at countertop height, and near the ceiling. Older homes can vary from one point to another. If measurements differ, plan from the smallest usable dimension and note where fillers or scribing may be needed.
Plan cabinet widths around real clearances
Base cabinets, wall cabinets, tall cabinets, and appliances need space to operate. Confirm that doors and drawers can open without blocking a walkway, appliance handle, or adjacent cabinet. Corner cabinets and refrigerator panels deserve extra attention because they influence the entire run.
Do not forget finishing components
A cabinet layout is more than cabinet boxes. Add fillers, finished side panels, toe kicks, trim, and any pieces required to finish exposed ends. These components make the installation look designed for the room rather than simply placed in it.
